Somewhere in a pile of boxes in my parent’s basement are blank VHS tapes with every episode of CBS’s The Weird Al Show. I loved Weird Al as a kid and still do as an adult. So you can imagine how excited I was to hear that he had his very own show! But even as a kid I realized it didn’t hit its full potential. CBS wanted an educational children’s series, but Yankovic’s humour style was more adult-oriented.
The show was cancelled after one season due to creative differences between Al and the network. It was said that CBS was constantly trying to re-write episodes and wanted to reinforce each episode’s lesson (or as Al put it, make them suck a little less). They were also sticklers on removing any “imitable behaviour” from the scripts that children might want to mimic.
It could be me but the show reminded me very much of Pee Wee’s Playhouse, just not as good.
