Jim Henson’s The Christmas Toy

If you remember this movie, I’m sure you are going crazy right now. This is a movie that my parents recorded during Christmas one year and I watched it over and over and over again. It is the first movie I remember crying at and even months later in July (yes I was still watching this in July), I remember crying while watching it and telling my mom I had a headache because I didn’t want her to know I was crying because of the movie. I had a lot of “headaches” that year as my favourite movie Top Gun was brought into my life (I cried at Top Gun both for the Goose death scene and because of it’s overall awesomeness!)

The plot is pretty simple, when no people are around, the toys come to life (so suck it Toy Story, got your storyline beat by over 10 years!). If the toys are caught out of the position that a person left them in, they will be frozen forever…basically they turn into what we think toys are anyway I guess…

Anyway, the favourite toy Rugby (a stuffed tiger, who has pretty much the same voice as Gonzo from The Muppets) wanted stay the favourite (again, it seems like Toy Story just completely stole this story line) and attempts to wrap himself so that the kid Jaime will open the gift and see Rugby again and remember how much she loves him. I know, pretty bullet-proof plan huh?

This movie is definitely something that meant the world to me as a kid but I had forgotten existed until I stumbled upon it while watching tv last year on vacation in Florida (America’s penis).

I hope there is someone reading this that is filled with the same joy I had when I re-discovered it. That would be a great Christmas gift…also my own dragon would be a great gift.

Merry Christmas!

  1. I am on a nostalgia kick, after listing my ghettoblaster for sale on Kijiji…. And I stumbled on this, and totally remember this movie! 🙂

Almost as good as Home Alone.
