Pound Puppies

Pound Puppies! The puppies your parents were happy to adopt, unlike those real puppies down at the real pound. I mean who wants those puppies? They were likely from broken homes, impossible to train and probably had fleas. Sorry, I’m sure I’ve upset you with all this talk of actual puppies that weren’t adopted back in the 80s. Well if it helps all those puppies are long dead now. Feel better? Good. Man, I’m gonna be a great dad some day. And with that, enjoy this Pound Puppies commercial!

The Big Comfy Couch

Normally when I’m talking about the big comfy couch, I’m referring to the worn-down, mismatched and lumpy couch in my living room that my girlfriend has been nagging to get rid of for years. But in this case I’m talking about the 90s Canadian children’s series The Big Comfy Couch. Nobody does kids programming like the Canadians, I would know…I am Canadian and spent my youth watching Loonette the Clown and her dolly Molly solve everyday problems while sitting on their green sofa. The show was such a success in Canada that it was picked up in the USA in 1995 and became a staple of afternoon TV. As for the rest of us, we’ve enjoyed The Simpsons the entire duration of their history…or at least the first 12 years. However, one thing has always bothered us Simpsons fans. What state they live in? No, that’s been answered. Why they never age? Hell no! They are cartoon characters they never age! No, the real question keeping us up all night is: What do The Simpsons sound like in other countries? Well, wonder no more for I give you the answer right here! Observe: Now that that is answered, sleep well my friends. Sleep well.

In the late 1980’s something strange happened in pop culture. The jocks/cool kids were becoming the ones scoffed at, while the “genuine nerds” of the world were getting their well deserved glory. How else do you explain the story of Toby Radloff, a Cleveland file clerk turned comic book character turned MTV corespondent. You might recognize his story as the funny subplot to the 2003 film American Splendor, but his celebrity was no joke.   If you were to ask anyone to describe an exaggerated stereotype of a nerd, you’d get Toby Radloff. With a distinctive manner of speech and very quirky mannerisms, Toby is as nerdy as you can get…and is very proud of it. The MTV audience of the late 80’s got a kick out of Toby, at first for comic relief. But he quickly became a figure of inspiration. He wasn’t ashamed of who he was or what he wore, he was proud to be a nerd. Shortly after the release of Revenge of the Nerds and with Toby all over MTV, …
