No Holds Barred: The Match The Movie

It is the epitome of 80s pop culture, it’s Hulk Hogan in his first starring film role. No Holds Barred was an 80s masterpiece of terrible dialogue, cheesy acting, fight scenes, beefcake and awesomeness! The film centers around RIP (Hulk Hogan), who is the heavyweight wrestling champion (just like in real life at the time). Ratings for his matches are beating every other television program so bad that the evil head of the World Television Network wants RIP for his own network. When he can’t get RIP, he tries to replace him with ZEUS. What happens next is a fight to the death!

To promote the release of the film, WWE brought ZEUS (played by Tiny Lister) into its program to feud with the Hulk. The storyline was that ZEUS got jealous during the making of No Holds Barred and is now exacting revenge. The original plan was for Hulk Hogan to defend his heavyweight title against ZEUS at WrestleMania VI in Toronto’s Skydome. However, the film was bust and Zeus couldn’t wrestle to save his life. In an effort to blow off the feud and make a little extra money, they sold the movie on Pay-Per-View which included a special cage match between Hogan & Brutus Beefcake vs. Randy Savage & Zeus. This was called No Holds Barred The Match The Movie.

I don’t know how it didn’t do well? ZEUS was a scary looking dude and paired with the Macho Man we got some real classic interviews…
