It’s time to Rumble, it’s time for the ROYAL RUMBLE

It’s one can’t miss event of the year for both wrestling fans and used to be wrestling fans. It’s the Royal Rumble, where 30 men try to throw each other over the top rope for a main event slot at WrestleMania. The Rumble has been running since 1988, when “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan became the inaugural winner. Since then, the event has been come a staple for the WWE. Even though they don’t do it as much now, I get most nostalgic about the Royal Rumble when thinking about the classic intros where they show all 30 competitors. Remember the SNES version… The Rumble has had many great moments, from Ric Flair 1992 win, Rey Mysterio winning for the late great Eddie Guerrero, to Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior squaring off for the first time. Every year, the WWE puts out a great video package called “by the numbers” that always gets me hyped. The Royal Rumble is on Sunday, January 25th. Advertisements

16-bit WWE themes

I don’t shy away from the fact that I was and still am a HUGE wrestling fan, and an even bigger fan of wrestling video games. Nothing would bring me more joy than putting in the SNES cartridge for Royal Rumble, seeing the LJN logo and hearing that classic 16-bit music. There is something so exciting and classic about a pixelated photo of a WWF superstar and a cheesy 16-bit knock off of their theme. It gets me in the mood for a rumble. That’s why I had to share these themes of current WWE superstars by 16 Bit Themes.

It’s Time To Rumble

It’s once again time to rumble…. Well, actually yesterday was time to rumble as the WWE put on it’s annual battle royal style pay-per-view known as the Royal Rumble. Don’t tell me who won, I PVR’d it. The Royal Rumble has been a January tradition dating back to 1988 when the first Rumble was won by Hacksaw Jim Duggan in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. For hardcore wrestling fans and casual fans alike, this is the most entertaining event the WWE puts on (outside of WrestleMania). The pay-per-view centers around it’s main event in which 2 wrestlers start in the ring, every 90 seconds a new wrestler enters until 30 men have entered the match. You eliminate opponents by throwing them over the top rope and both feet must touch the floor. Last man standing is the winner and gets a championship match at WrestleMania. I’ve seen every Royal Rumble match in history. Growing up I would rent the VHS tapes from my local video rental store (hey, remember when store’s rented movies). My personal favorite Rumbles …

My Favourite Wrestler of All Time: Mick Foley

My favourite wrestling star of all time is Mick Foley. His promo work and hardcore abilities were leagues ahead of most others during his years as a professional wrestler. To add to this, he is a very smart and down to earth guy. And his books are fucking hilarious. Mick Foley was embroiled in an excellent long term fued with HHH in early 2000. The two had an epic Street Fight match at the Royal Rumble and then followed that up with a Hell In A Cell encounter at No Way Out. These matches go down in my mind as two of the most exciting and well worked contests I have seen. Even to this day, 13 years later, they hold up as top 20 caliber matches I have ever witnessed. Mick Foley is credited by many wrestling pundits for helping HHH get over with the fans and reaching a superstar level because of their work together for these two months. The following clip illustrates Foley abandoning his Mankind persona in favour of the more …
