The comeback of Jake “The Snake” Roberts

Perhaps one of the most famous wrestlers of all time, Jake “The Snake” Roberts is currently in the hospital recovering after a serious bout of pneumonia. This health scare came after Jake had possibly the greatest comeback in wrestling history. No, he hasn’t wrestled in years and might not ever again. Jake’s comeback has been a personal one. After years of being in the spotlight, Jake developed a serious addiction to alcohol and hard drugs.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts had a pretty messed up childhood. I’m not going to get into it, but it was….shall we say f**ked up. He was able to overcome those early childhood events and turn that into some serious acting skills. Jake started wrestling in the 70s and hit his popularity in the late 80s/early 90s with the World Wrestling Federation. He was known for being one of the best psychologist and talkers in the industry.

Jake would appear and disappear from the spotlight many times throughout the 90s. In the 2000s, Jake wasn’t much around. The last memory anyone had of him was his appearance in the documentary Beyond The Mat, which depicted him as a down and out drug addict.

From what we heard, Jake was seriously battling his inner demons. Many were shocked as the years went on, seemingly “healthy” wrestlers were passing away and Jake was still surviving. He hated life. He wanted to die and was at his lowest. Then he found a friend….Diamond Dallas Page. Page, a former wrestler himself, had been making a splash in the home fitness market with DDP Yoga. Page not only wanted to prove that DDP Yoga would work on anyone, but he really wanted to help his longtime friend and mentor. So, DDP had Jake move into his house, cleaned him up and got him back into shape. The results were amazing. After a lifetime of pain, Jake Roberts was finally starting to feel happy about himself. And in April 2014, he was honored by the WWE and inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Jake in the hospital right now is scary. It’s scary because it’s not a fitting end to his comeback story. A fitting end would be for Jake to enjoy his remaining days, be a positive image for DDP Yoga, and  mentor the youngster of today. We wish Jake nothing but the best.
